Uri aphnal pakda Our future is bright
Hwang Jin-yong
A fateful title for a song. Kim Il-song died in July 1994, and the arduous years of hunger followed soon after. The near future did not become very bright, but for those who survived life began to get better during the 2000s.
SMC

Tallyŏkaja mirero Dash to the future
No creation info
Sextet: Pak Mi-kyong, Jong Su-hyang, Kim Sol-mi, Ryu Jina, Pak Son-hyang, Kim Yu-kyong. Abnormal order; Kim Yu-kyong is at the extreme right, not in the centre where she usually is. The camera avoids her, and also Pak Mi-kyong.

00.26.59 높이 날려라 우리의 당기 Nophi nallyŏra uriye tangi Fly high our Party flag!
Instrumental, both choirs at the end

00.31.51 나의 길 Naye kil My way 我が道
Composition: Hwang Jin-yong
Music by MBB; violin: Sonu Huang-hui
This is not the song made famous by Frank Sinatra and performed by MBB in July 2012, but a NKorean composition. The vocalist is former Unhasu Orchestra singer Kim Myong-sin. As UO was disbanded at the end of August, she apparently soon found a new working place in SMC. Chosonot fits her better than the SMC uniform. As a perfectly educated opera singer, her singing style is clearly different from the vocalists of MBB, who sing in a pop band style. The contrast can be easily observed here.

Na salmi kotphyŏnan kot My life was like a flower opening
Composition: Om Ha-jin 엄하진, lyrics: Pak Yun; a well known old melody. Om was active as a composer at least during the 1980s.
MBB instrumental; string quartet

Jogukwa na Motherland and I 祖国と私
Composition: Hwang Jin-yong
Piano: Kim Jong-mi
Solo: Ryu Jina

Hyŏnak sajungju Si wŏrimnida It is October
String quartet: Sonu Hyang-hui, Hong Su-kyong, Cha Yong-mi, Yu Un-jong
MBB performed the same song a year before in the 20121010 as a vocal sweetly rolling pop version. Here it is turned into a piece of a classical violin concerto. Arrangement and style play a very large role in performances.

Solo: Ham Kum-ju. She also is a highly trained opera singer, which probably included also studies in a foreign conservatory, as was often the case during the liberal Kim Jong Il years. She has the title of People’s Artiste. Her career started at least in 2007 or earlier in Mansudae Art Troupe, and she performed also with Unhasu Orchestra in 2009 in its first concerts. Now she thus is singing with SMC.

00.51.17 타오르라 우등불아 Thaorŭra udŭngbura Burn up, campfire!
Composition: An Jong-ho 안정호, lyrics: Cha Yong-do 차영도, 2010
Quintet: Pak Mi-kyong, Kim Sol-mi, Jong Su-hyang, Pak Son-hui, Kim Yu-kyong

Uriye chongchangue phyŏngwaga itta Peace is on our bayonets
SMC. The conductor is Yun Pom-ju, again a former Unhasu Orchestra member now found in the SMC uniform. It is possible, however, that he was only visiting. He made a memorable version of this song with UO only a few months before. He gets also this orchestra play with the dramatic way the song deserves. What is missing was Hwang Un-mi in vocals. She will arrive to sing this with SMC in 2015, but without Yun Pom-ju.

Composer: Hwang Jin-yong
SMC female septet. One would have expected to see here even more former UO singers, but there is only Kim Myong-sin at the extreme rignt.

Widehan kŭ irŭmŭn sŭngniye kichi His great name is a flag of victory
Composition: Hwang Jin-yong
A new melody for KJU also from the veteran composer. His first published one for KJU. The veterans are getting into new action.
MBB+SMC

Chosŏn rodongtang manse Hail to the Korean Workers’ Party!
Grande finale

Ra Yu-mi was absent from the concert. As she is one of the few who never seemed to face any kind of loyalty investigations, the reason may be something else. Flu? Work elsewhere?

MBB influence is spreading, as can be seen in the way the SMC nonet adopts the rhytmically moving choreography of the MBB septet. It has not been the standard with this song.

In a sense this concert can be remembered as a Jong Su-hyang concert. She got one solo performance. The dress fit her perfectly, making her shine in her beauty. As the cameras purposefully avoided Pak Mi-kyong and Kim Yu-kyong, they often focused instead on her. Apparently no dark clouds of possible political problems were hovering around her head, now or later. She has never become a present but invisible singer.

The North Korean broadcasting system is very open and honest in this regard. Although they do not tell exactly what the trouble is, they nevertheless with their deliberate care of whom to show and whom not to indicate clearly that something is going on behind the scenes. It is impossible to know how much Pak and Kim knew about this. What little was seen of them, they appeared to be singing and dancing as happily as ever.

Composition
Hwang Jin-yong 6; 5 old, 1 new; the first new composition for MBB
Sol The-song 1 new
U Jong-hui 2 old
An Jong-ho 1 old

Cha Ho-gun lyrics for a 2009 song; lyrics writers for the 2 new songs unknown

23 songs, 2 new KJU, 21 old. 9 from MBB vice directors, a high proportion again.

The unification of the outlook of the band proceeded one step further when hats were put on the heads of the ladies, though more was to come in the future.

Yet this concert with the SMC was rather good, one of the best among MB concerts. It was given ample space and time, so that it was not drowned by the large military choir, and the two ensembles rather competed with each other in a friendly way.

It appears that he was specifically invited to conduct the same composition here at the KWP anniversary with SMC.

Here’s something I just noticed about their shoes in this concert. They’re not only “civilian,” the shoes have red soles, in the style of Christian Louboutin. I think this detail is rather bourgeois, but interesting nevertheless.

Indeed. Christian Louboutin appears to make rather expensive shoes. Whether these are by him or only similar style we do not know, but the ones on the feet of the MBB ladies look expensive too. Bourgeois details with them are always interesting. Money has not been saved on their outfit and instruments.

    • I found the similar style of Louboutins as the ones MBB ladies are wearing and it’s called Daffodile.

The KCTV camera guys definitely know how to “take orders”. This was during 타오르라 우등불아.

This is already a thing of the past, but I’ll share it anyway.

Fun fact: The similar avoidance technique was used on PEE’s Kim Won il, as shown in this video:
