Stage (2)

Concert theme: Congratulating participants in the first meeting of airpersons of the KPA with the subtheme ”immensely rosy is the future of Songun Korea as there is the leadership of Kim Jong Un”
Place: April 25 House of Culture
Audience: Air force military
KJU: Present
KCNA: Clear approval; calendar>> April 20, 2014
YouTube: https://youtu.be/ie5d7Cc0QRM
Right after the international media has welcomed the return of the MB, with endless comments on the length of their skirts, the musicians put on very unsexy air force trousers and leather jackets. That does not diminish the charm of their music a bit.

Pak Son-hyang and Ri Myong-hui have returned

00.00.18 Starting rituals with KJU
Suryŏngnimŭn yŏngwŏnhan inminye theyŏng The leader will eternally be the sun of the people
Composition: An Jong-ho 안정호, lyrics: Jo Songo 조성오, 1996. A KIS memorial song.

Suryŏngnim kŭrinŭn maŭm Our hearts yearning for the leader
Composition: Pak Jin-guk , lyrics: Jon Jin. No date, but obviously also this is a post-death song for KIS.
Solo: Ri Myong-hui

Janakena suryŏng nimŭl sengakhamnida Day and night we think of the leader
No creation info
Guitar: Kang Phyong-hui
Quartet: Sonu Hyang-hui, Hong Su-kyong, Cha Yong-mi, Yu Un-jong
They are not educated as singers, but somehow everything they do has a magical quality

String quartet
Duo: Ryu Jina, Ra Yu-mi -> quintet / Jong Su-hyang, Kim Sol-mi, Pak Mi-kyong

Pektuye malpalkup sori Sound of horse hooves in Mt.
Instrumental, string quartet. Classic MBB style.

Jangunnim senggak Longing for the general
Composition & lyrics: Hwang Jin-yong
The song was made a year before KIS died, and could have been made for him in preparation, but it was played with passion also in spring 2012 in memorial concerts for KJI. Here it is performed so near the Day of the Sun celebrations (April 15) that the reference may be rather to KIS. It can be considered as an intergenerational Kimist song.
Guitar: Kang Phyong-hui
Solo: Ra Yu-mi

00.30.48 매혹과 흠모 Mehok kwa hŭmmo Glorious and Admirable 魅惑と欣慕
Composition: An Jong-ho 안정호, lyrics: Yun Du-gun 윤두근, 2010
Violin solo: Sonu Huang-hui
Cello: Yu Un-jong
There could have been more of this, before Sony left the ensemble.

Ne salmye pogŭmjari Resting place for all my life 我が人生の安息所
Composition: Pak Jin-guk 박진국, lyrics: Kim Un-suk 김은숙, no date, but most of Pak’s compositions are from the 1990s and early 2000s. A heavily dynastic song about Mount Pektu and KIS.
Solo: Ra Yu-mi
Ra got a second solo almost in a row. Her star is now very high.

Composition: An Jong-ho 안정호, lyrics: Cha Ho-gun 차호근, 2014
Violin: Hong Su-kyong
This song is always interesting to watch. It is performed by a quintet as in all previous concerts, but the members and their order is again different. Ra Yu-mi is now elevated to the main singer position, and does not participate; Jong Su-hyang likewise has a more important role in the following duo performance. Pak Son-hyang and Ri Myong-hui have returned to the band, apparently everything cleared, as the camera focuses often on them. Son-hyang acts now as the axis of the chreography. Pak Mi-kyong and Kim Sol-mi are among those who move. The pitch order is avoided as always. There is also Kim Yu-kyong singing and dancing. She is never absent from the stage composition of the band, like so many of her colleagues are. Yet, she is kept there invisible, again at both ends of the grouping, barely recognizable. She is under very special treatment.

Duo: Jong Su-hyang, Ryu Jina
Quartet singing in pangchang at the back stage; Kim Yu-kyong is at the left corner with Pak Mi-kyong, Ri Myong-hui and Pak Son-hyang at the right corner.

Pada manphunga Song of high haul in the sea
Solo: Kim Sol-mi. She is a very good and expressive singer.
The pangchang quartet steps down to the front stage, but Yu-kyong remains almost invisible.

Composition: Hwang Jin-yong
00.56.48 Medley
Nanŭn yŏngwŏni kŭdeye adŭl I’ll be forever your son
Lyrics: Jon Tongu
This used to contain a Kim Yu-kyong solo, but is now performed by a quintet: Kim Sol-mi, Pak Mi-kyong, Jong Su-hyang, Ryu Jina, Ra Yu-mi

Composition: An Jong-ho 안정호, lyrics: Kil Yong-jo 길영조, 1996

Jŏ hanŭl nophi nalgo toraon jŏnyŏke Fly High and Return in the Evening
Difficult to date; Jo started to compose for MBB in 2013, while Choe was an active poet during the 1980s and 1990s, vanishing then from my sources. Either this is a new composition for an old or new poem, or we have two creators with the same name.
Duo: Jong Su-hyang, Ra Yu-mi

Composition: U Jong-hui
Instrumental -> quintet

01.05.08 추억의 노래 Chuŏgye nore Song of reminiscence 追憶の歌
No creation info
Trio: Pak Mi-kyong, Jong Su-hyang, Ra Yu-mi. This song is always a trio, people only change. Kim Yu-kyong is of course out.

Hanŭlye pangphe uriga tweri We’ll be the shield of the sky
From the 1950s film Don’t wait for our return 『我らを待つな』, no other info
Instrumental -> quintet

Nanŭn yŏngwŏni kŭdeye adŭl I’ll be forever your son
Quintet. In the video in the background every Kim is linked with the air force.

No creation info
Trio: Pak Mi-kyong, Jong Su-hyang, Ri Myong-hui

Kŭi ŏpsin mossara We cannot live without him
Female quartet: Kim Sol-mi, Ra Yu-mi, Jong Su-hyang, Pak Mi-kyong

Chwego saryŏnggwan dongji kŏngangŭl chukwŏnham Celebrating the good health of comrade highest commander
Composition: Ri Jongo 리종오 李宗伍, lyrics: Choe Jun-kyong 최준경 崔俊庆, date unknown, a KIS era song
Octet: Kim Yu-kyong has appeared at the extreme right end of the line

Hyŏngmyŏng muryŏgŭn wŏnsunim ryŏngdoman pattŭnda Our revolutionary armed forces support only the marshal’s leadership
Strange title. Who would contest the leadership of KJU in April 2014?

Urinŭn tangsinbagge morŭnda We will follow you only 我々はあなたしか知らない
Composition: Hwang Jin-yong 황진영 & Kim Un-ryong, lyrics: Cha Ho-gun 차호근 & Ri Ji-song, 2013

01.35.10 Ending rituals

Kim Un-ryong: 3 new
Hwang Jin-yong: 3; old 2, new 1
An Jong-ho: 3; old 2, new 1
Sol The-song & Ham Hyok new 1
U Jong-hui: 2 old
No creation info: 7

Lyrics new
Cha Ho-gun 6
Ri Ji-song 2
 (1 with CHG)

25 songs; probably old 19, new 6, nearly all new lyrics by Cha. He may be becoming the poet of the KJU generation, like Yun Du-gun was that of the KJI generation. The proportion of the old to new songs reflects the nearness of the Day of the Sun, as well as the air force theme. At least 11 by MBB vice directors.

The musicians wore interesting clothing.

Much better video AND audio in full stereo can be found here: https://youtu.be/NXGp_7Dpa6o
    Probably from a NKorean DVD?

Does anyone know what is the mark of the guitar that Kang Phyong-hui is playing here in 20140420?

Hi Pekka, while searching for Jon He-ryon, I noticed that on this page you use the spelling of Jon He-ryong, with a ‘g’ at the end.

I am not surprised. Could be in many places elsewhere. Thanks. Corrected now here.

  4. In the clip of “High haul in the sea” published by Moranbong Band HD on Youtube, the phrase “ogya-diya”, which is repeated a few times and seems somewhat important, is left untranslated. Does anyone know the meaning of this phrase?

    • AMD Rocks said:

The phrase “ogya-diya” mostly can be found in Korean traditional folk songs especially in sailor’s song. “Ogya-diya” is a call-and-answer format and very rhythmic in order to keep the rowers together. It also expresses sailor’s cheerful and energetic rowing.
