Almost 7 months have passed since the last public concert. Sonu Hyang-hui and Ri Yun-hui appear to have left the band, though Sonu briefly appeared later in September in an unpublished visit to a SMC concert.

Ryu Jina is now being named and treated as a Merited Artiste; 공훈배우 류진아. The organization clearly celebrates Ryu Jina. She is the queen of the evening, singing many solos and duos in this concert. As if receiving the title had happened recently, even though KCNA announced the fact nearly two years earlier, in 2013.7.21.There is something very strange in this.

The camera never focuses on Kim’s face, only on that of Ryu, even though Kim was allowed to sing in the duetto. Kim’s avoidance is so conspicuous that it is underlined. From this we may be able to infer that the director of choreography and the director of videography follow different personnel policies, and that there is no smooth cooperation between these sections of the organization.

Migs Caldeo at Stimmekoreas https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iPpgqZuQ8Yo comments that the original title of the song was “최고사령관동지 건강을 축함” which means “We celebrate the health of Comrade Supreme Commander” with the original chorus being:

내 나라 위하여 내 조국을 위하여
우리의 최고사령관동지 건강을 축
For my country, for my motherland,
We celebrate the health of our Comrade Supreme Commander

The version that the Moranbong Band used in this one is titled “최고사령관동지 건강을 축함” which means “We wish for the health of Comrade Supreme Commander” with the chorus being changed to:

혁명을 위하여 내 조국을 위하여
우리의 최고사령관동지 건강을 축
For the revolution, for the motherland,
We wish for the health of our Comrade Supreme Commander

There is no apparent reason for these small changes.

U Jong-hui 2 new
Hwang Jin-yong 1 new
Jang Chung-sim 1 new
Sol The-song 1 new
Hyon Kyong-il 1 new

Ri Ji-song 2
Ri Hye-jong 2
Mun Chun-sim 1
Jo Kwang-chol 1

No creation info 4; I suspect that they are all new

18 songs. Old 8, mainly instrumental or in medleys. New 10. The balance is heavily on new songs. Composer An Jong-ho did not play a role in this concert, which is rare. 3 songs from MBB vice directors; not much.

Arrangement 편곡: Jang Chung-sim & Ri Myong-nam 리명남 at 37.44. Jang also arranges songs for the band in addition to composing, at least the song he himself composed; Ri seems to be specialized only on arranging.

Arrangement 편곡: U Jong-hui 우정희 of her own compositions at 09.24 and 49.00. It thus appears that the composer often, though not always, appears as the composer.

There is also a mention of Arrangement: Group 집채 at 13.39. Essentially it informs only that more than 2 people were involved, but it contains the possibility that also band members have participated. KJI emphasized that the work unit as a whole should produce the art work; a usual ideal in socialistic art production.
In spite of the performance of a number of older songs, KIS and KJI are missing from the background videos, excepting a brief glimpse of a bronze statue of KIS at 10.23; KJU and the headquarters of the Korean Worker’s Party apparently now stand in the legitimacy horizon almost on their own without much need for the eternal Kims.

The musicians seem to be these:
First violin 차영미 Cha Yong-mi
Second violin: 김은하 Kim Un-ha
Third violin, formerly second, 홍수경 Hong Su-kyong
Cello 유은정 Yu Un-jong
Synthesizer 리희경 Ri Hui-kyong
Synthesizer 김영미 Kim Yong-mi
Piano 김정미 Kim Jong-mi
Guitar: AnonymousGuitarist, same as in 20140904
Bass 전헤련 Jon He-ryon
Saxophone 최정임 Choe Jong-im
Drums 한순정 Han Sun-jong

The atmosphere of the concert … not too sunny. Professional. Levels of creativity and originality … not too high. Creating masterpieces like waterfalls is not easy, and stage behavior can be enchanting only with a fairly high degree of freedom, respect and security. Some of that is missing.

As the video quality was not very high, there is no sense in presenting many photos, but a bit about the camera work. The camera went near three ladies, who can be recognized without any problem:

Cha Yong-mi 20150427 29.03 ed

Cha Yong-mi 29.03

Jong Su-hyang 20150427 04.00 ed

Jong Su-hyang 04.00

Ryu Jina 20150427 10.40 ed

Ryu Jina 10.40

But the camera kept a clear distance with other members. Only occasionally the pictures are clear enough to enable definite identification.

Kim Yu-kyong & Ri Su-kyong 20150427 43.52

Kim Yu-kyong & new singer Ri Su-kyong  43.52

During 21 February – 23 March 2015 there was organized a concert series called “Songs of Memory”, where former stars, now in their 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s, performed. They were of the Mansudae Art Troupe, Pochonbo Electronic Ensemble and Wangjaesan Art Troupe, all orchestras established by Kim Jong-il. https://youtu.be/rgmFNO6kcls
This was followed in April by news that Kim Ki-nam, whose career as an art and propaganda bureaucrat span the whole history of these orchestras, had retired.
Perhaps the strain of organizing such a big event was the trigger to desire more restful life; he was 86 already. – Yet, after a few months he was working again, busy as always. DPRK started cultural diplomacy this year, sending the Chongbong Band and State Merited Chorus to Russian in August-September, and MBB+SMC to China in December – a fateful visit. Kim Ki-nam’s experience certainly was needed in all this.

In this concert was riu jina seen more than usual. That was a little bit boring. And I don’t understand why they replace sonu. Oh and thanks for the new song informations.

  2. kwaximus said:

Thanks, Pekka! Just a quick note. The 7th singer is indeed Ri Myoung-hui.
She is recognizable in the pictures from the concert in high res (e.g. 9th picture from the top if you follow the link).

  3. pekkakorhonen said:

You are right, in the picture she can be recognized. Good. One puzzle less.

I have done some deleting of old comments; so many of them that it became difficult to find what contained info of lasting significance. I have saved important links, and will put them here somewhere before long.

Here’s the link from the tonpomail Youtube channel for those who have not seen it yet. It’s much clearer (Pekka, feel free to clear this comment if the info is here already): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ijusnY4QkXQ

Spot-on analysis, Pekka. Even with the lousy resolution, skewed aspect ratio, and weird camera work, you sorted it all out very well. Many kudos. Thanks much.

    Thanks, Leon.

    Small typo: “Kim Kyong-hui & Ri Su-kyong 20150427 43.52” should read “Kim Yu-kyong & Ri Su-kyong 20150427 43.52”. I am quite sure this is not the aunt of KJU.🙂

  8. pekkakorhonen said:

So true. Corrected in a minute. Thanks.
In addition to the aunt of KJU, there is also another Kim Kyong-hui, a beautiful former singer of the Unhasu Orchestra. It is with the latter with whom I mixed Kim Yu-kyong. They have a certain resemblance with each other.

  9. There is a version with much better quality but the first part is missing.
